About Me

Welcome to Sabbatiblog, which is my way of connecting with colleagues, friends, and family while I am on sabbatical leave. It’s my hope that you will enjoy my travels to best practice not-for-profit organizations over the next six weeks right along with me. I’ll post regular entries describing my visits and observations, and I’ll count on you to help me consider new questions to ask or ideas to explore all along the way. My gratitude to The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust for funding the experience. I suspect it will be life changing for my organization, The Beatitudes Campus, and for me personally.

It makes a difference who you spend your time with...

Our keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the Council of Health and Human Ministries of the United Church of Christ (CHHSM) was Katie Jo Lincoln, Chairman of the Board and Chief Investment Officer of Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. This organization is based in Phoenix...how funny to meet a neighbor at a conference in Michigan. Katie spoke w/ intelligence and passion about land management and sustainability - a subject that heretofore I had considered rather dry. Not so with Katie at the microphone.

The theme of our conference this year is sustainability, a subject near and dear to Katie's heart. As she spoke about sustainability of our lands, she also spoke of her passion for not-for-profit work and noted that the same pillars of strength underpin the sustainability of our nfp organizations as our land...I was particularly struck by one statement, and I 'll leave you to ponder it this evening:

"It makes a difference who we spend our time with."

Think about that.

God bless,

Peggy
